W Is For Winning

Back in 2006, when I was a freshman at FIT, I was a library clerk in the periodicals department of the library. My love of fashion magazines and catalogs is something that has always been with me, but when I was working at the library, that love grew 10 fold. I mean, come on! I was surrounded by books, magazines, catalogs and archived images from the beginning of fashion magazine time to present date. I was living the dream. I went home everyday from the library, arms piled high with magazines that we had duplicates of and tear outs from magazines that we didn’t need. I would gladly spend the entirety of my work shift organizing the stacks of look books and bound collections of back issues of Glamour and and Harper’s Bazaar. Sometimes when I look back at the sheer joy I had working in the periodicals department, I wonder why I didn’t see the connection. Makea+ magazines+ fashion= happiness!

Sigh, one can’t lament the past forever. I will make the best of my current situation and write off the past few years as a supreme learning and growth period. Something that I am doing now, with my laser focus on editorial photo spreads, is taking the time to study the magazine images that I find striking. While leisurely leafing through the September issue of W magazine, I was just blown away by this editorial photo spread:

I am not often moved by photo spreads. I may love the aesthetic of the images and the styling of the clothing, but not necessarily have a gut reaction to the pictures. I don’t know why I felt so strongly while looking at these images, but I did. And it reminded me of another W photo spread that I can only describe as breathtaking. In the July 2005 issue of W magazine, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie did the photo shoot to end all photo shoots: Domestic Bliss. I used to have a physical copy of this issue and I reluctantly recycled it. BUT!!!! I have the digital copies of the pictures and they will stay with me forever.

Black & White

I am constantly searching for new sources of inspiration for outfit ideas. One of my favorites is The Sartorialist website. I could literally spend hours searing through the random selection of pictures that Scott Schuman has added to his blog. Everyday I find a new look or part of an outfit that I am just dying to replicate. This black and white combo is easy enough to replicate, but also lends itself to be individualized effortlessly.

Who’s That Girl

When I go shopping,  I like to imagine that if the store was a person, what would she or he look like. As I wander up and down the aisles and look through the shelves and stacks of clothing, I try to get an image in my head of who this person is. What’s their favorite food? Where is their dream vacation spot? What’s the item of clothing they can’t live without? Do they speak another language and go traveling all over the world? Or do they prefer to sit at home and snuggle up with a blanket and book? This could either be the work of an overactive imagination or proof of my slow descent into madness. Either way, it’s something that I do and something that I would like to share with you guys.

Now, if I could draw, I would sketch out lovely images of women, surrounded by the items that they love. But, a talented artist I am not. Nope, not at all. But, where my natural talents fail me, I have polyvore to lift me up!

The Gap-

She’s in grad school, studying every second she can spare. When her nose isn’t buried in a book, she’s breathing in the fresh air and laughing at something her best friend just texted her. She walks too fast and falls deeply in love with all the wrong guys. Her nails are always chipped because she doesn’t have the patience to keep them up. She’d much rather be hanging with friends or studying with her classmates. Her part time job working at a non profit allows her the flexibility to still live her life while also earning money and making a difference. She’s earnest and headstrong. Easy going and well read.

Anthropologie-

You know that girl who just looks like she speaks French, can wake up looking gorgeous, and throw together an amazing outfit in two minutes without even breaking a sweat? Yea, that’s her. She traveled during her gap year and took up random language classes as she traversed across Europe. While spending a summer in Paris, she befriended a designer, who used her as his muse  for his upcoming collection. Her boyfriend is a classically trained cellist and she likes to show up to his performances looking chic and mysterious. Her studio apartment is small and messily tidy. Stacks of magazines sit upon thrift store tables. Pillows and cushions are strewn on the floor, remnants of last night’s gathering of friends. Her refrigerator is covered with postcards from pals overseas and black and white snapshots of random days walking through the park.

H&M-

She can sing every lyric to Lana Del Ray’s Young and Beautiful and rap every line of Salt N Pepa’s Push It. She can spend hours on her hair and makeup, yet put together the perfect outfit in 10 minutes flat. Her future is wide open and before her. She is in love with life and makes no qualms letting you know it. Her days are long and her nights are even longer, but she bristles at being called a club girl. Her quick wit and easy charm makes her a favorite among the girls and guys. But she knows how to bite when backed in to a corner. Her lips are in a constant smirk, a telling sign of the quick witted quip to come.

The Hot Chick

There’s obviously no shortage of gorgeous women stalking red carpets lately.  But seriously, Jessica Biel just gave everyone a run for their money. This outfit is head to toe gorgeous.

Red Carpet Report: Ebony 100 Gala

So, obviously my invitation was lost in the mail. I mean, that’s the only logical explanation as to why I was not at the Ebony 100 Gala, which was last night, in New York City’s Jazz at Lincoln Center. But, me being the bigger person, I will not hold grudges. I will be an adult and move on and talk about what really matters: what people wore on the red carpet.

The Good:

Image
Amy Dubois Barnett- Nice color, nice makeup, nice hair.
Image
Keija Minor
Image
Berry Gordy- The tie sucks, but his smile makes up for it…..a little.
Image
Rhonda Ross- Lovely dress, hair and accessories.
Image
Lee Daniels- Looking good. Suit could stand to be a little more fitted.
Image
Jessica White- Stunning woman, but the dress, hair, and the makeup are just a shade too severe.

The Bad:

Image
Carla Hall- No. Just no.
Image
Desiree Rogers- Too much tulle, not enough pretty.
Image
Cynthia Rowley- I usually love her quirky style, but this is just bad.
Image
Eskedar Gobeze- Maybe she was trying to channel Marilyn Monroe, but between the stockings and the shawl made of children’s tears and bunny fur, it was not good.
Image
Mellody Hobson- Too cutesy for a grown woman.
Image
Marcus Samuelsson- Too. Much. Going. On. Can’t focus.
Image
Rachel Johnson- With such great stature, she should have chosen a better color than “preschool puke brown”.
Image
Pauletta Washington- Separately, maybe I could like the hair, the purse, and the dress. But all together, it looks like she’s trying too hard. What’s with the stockings?

The Gorgeous:

Image
Jermaine Jackson, Randy Jackson, Marlon Jackson, and Tito Jackson- Well done dudes. Well done.
Image
LaLa Anthony- This dress is amazing on her body. The hair and makeup look elegant and simple.
Image
Magic and Cookie Johnson- His graphite suit is MONEY and she look SLICK in her black dress.
Image
Nick Cannon- Love Love Love brown with pink and fuschia. The patterned suit against the floral tie and pocket square scream Gentleman. Well done.
Image
Kimberly and Tyson Chandler- He’s a tall drink of water in his suit with the skinny tie. And she looks elegant and poised. Beautiful couple.
Image
Van Jones- Great smile (check), Great suit (check), Great tie (check). Slow clap all around.
Image
Victor Cruz and Elaina Watley- I like a man who thinks outside the Black Suit Box. This is a great color choice for him and Elaina looks cute in her dress and (I Want Those Shoes) heels.

A Room Of Her Own

All I need is a room. A room with room to grow. A room with space to breathe. A room with a view. A room with a heart that beats to my footsteps. I don’t have a lot of things and I don’t need a lot of furniture. Just a simple bed upon which I can lay my head. A warm place to sink into and where I can hide away from the world. A few chairs upon which to sit and converse with friends. A small table to place our glasses on. Large, wine glasses brimming with liquid and love.

All I need is a room. A room with a long dresser, made of rich wood. A dresser so cherished, not only for it’s aesthetic, but for what it holds. The clothes that I have acquired, neatly folded and tucked away. The loved ones that I have known, framed and displayed. The scents that have mingled in the air and landed on the skin of my wrist…the nape of my neck.

All I need is a room. A room for me.

All I need is a room. A room for me to be.

Looking Hot

Lupita Nyong’O is in the movie of the year and one of the best movies I’ve seen this past decade. 12 Years A Slave is groundbreakingly good. I’m pretty sure I just made up a word there, but whatever. I think it’s safe to say we’ll be seeing a lot of Lupita in the years to come, which is good on two fronts: she’s an amazing actress and she has amazing style. Move over Marion Cotillard, I’ve got a new red carpet crush.

Black Girls (and two guys) ROCK the Red Carpet

This Sunday (November 3rd) the annual Black Girls Rock awards show will air on BET at 7pm. This awards show was created to showcase amazing Black females in the entertainment industry and there was no shortage of drop dread gorgeous women that walked down the red carpet this past weekend at New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark.  As a fan and follower of Tracee Ellis Ross on Instagram, I was excited to see which outfit she decided on for the show. The Instagram videos of her outfit choices and the plethora of inspiration from the Pinterest hastag- #traceebgr- left me chomping at the bit to see what the final decision would be. Black Girls Rock is a fun event and I was not at all disappointed with the fun, sometimes feisty, outfits the stars donned as they strutted down the red carpet.

How To Wear: The Slip Dress

I have been searching high and low for a classic slip dress to add to my closet. I like to find items that I believe are classics and will last me a few years. A well made, well-fitting slip dress can be dressed up or down. Fall is the perfect season to get full use of a slip dress.

Now, I have yet to find one that fits my body and bank account. But I will not be dissuaded. I know one day I will happen upon a gorgeous slip dress and it will be love at first fit.  Until that fateful day, I will endure the hunt and search on. If you are lucky enough to already have a great slip dress, but find yourself perplexed as to how to transition it into the fall, I present you three options, all using the affordable $76 TOPSHOP Strap Back Slip Dress:

Slip dressWhen topped with a long cardigan and belted, the slip dress takes on a more businesslike look. Use simple jewelry and round toe heels to further demure the sexy slip dress.

Date Slip Dress

I like the juxtaposition of the soft slip dress against the toughness of a leather jacket. A pair of nude shooties and gold accented accessories and jewelry complete the date-night look.

Weekend Slip Dress
An oversized shawl sweater and flat boots are the perfect pieces to take this slip dress down a notch. Whether it’s Saturday lunch with the girls, running errands, or hitting up a matinee, this casual outfit will keep you comfortable and stylish.

Menswear Trends for Spring 2014

During the Spring, there are many trends that always repeat: brighter colors, lighter fabrics, looser more relaxed fits, and pastels. These trends cross the gender lines. Spring just makes people want to be brighter, lighter, and more carefree and clothing is often used to relate that feeling.

For Spring 2014, the designers pretty much agreed on the standard trends and added a few extra; such as foliage, different layering techniques, and the color white. I know, I know, it’s only October, but it’s never to early to start looking ahead for the next fashion season.
